General Information Course Reserves

General Information

Please submit your reserve request before classes begin to allow sufficient time to process materials, and to purchase titles not owned by the library. Materials on reserve are removed at the end of each course.

Electronic Reserves

Faculty can set up links to their electronic reserves through their department's course management systems (Blackboard) or to the Library's e-reserves system. If you would like more information or assistance please contact the Library's reserve coordinator. Whenever possible, materials should be provided to the library electronically.

Copyright Policy

The JFK Memorial  Library policy for reserves, including electronic reserves, is based on the principle that the fair use provisions of the Copyright Act of 1976, Section 107 permit the making of copies of copyrighted material for classroom use as long as consistent with the four determining fair use factors.

Course Reserves are created upon instructor request to support a particular class. Materials are made available either online or physically through the JFK LIBRARY. Items that may be on reserve for a class include textbooks, articles, lecture notes, case studies, previous exams, and other supplementary readings as requested by course instructors.

How to Put Materials on Reserve

  • Reserve Requests should be received at least 5 working days in advance of assignments to ensure that materials will be ready. This processing period is especially critical during the first six weeks of each semester. Request lists are date/time stamped as received and processed strictly on a first come, first served basis.

A special note on accessibility:

  • "It is the policy of the CSU to make information technology resources and services accessible to all CSU students, faculty, staff and the general public regardless of disability." For more information, see: http://www.calstate.edu/accessibility/
  • If you have any students who may have special needs that may require additional processing to allow them to use the reserve materials, please inform Reserves staff upon submission of reserve requests in person, by phone at (323) 343-3991, or by email at reserves@calstatela.edu
  • We are making every effort to provide accessible reserve items. However, please contact the Reserves department immediately if you are informed by any student that a reserve item in its present format is not useable.

To place materials on reserve:

Complete the Online Reserve Request Form and submit it via the web. Alternatively, you can complete the Printable Form, print it out, and submit it along with the materials to the appropriate reserve desk locations listed below.

For books and/or e-books not available in the JFK Memorial Library collection:

This order process may take several weeks. Please note that you will be notified when the materials have arrived or if any issues arise.
