Search Tips

Boolean Operators are connector words that can help you narrow or broaden a search. They include: AND, OR and NOT.

‣ AND narrows your search by only returning results that contain the keywords.

‣ OR broadens your search by returning results that either one of the keywords.

‣ NOT narrows your search by excluding all articles that contain the keyword.

  • Use Truncation (usually the asterisk * symbol) to search for variations of a keyword. For example: If searching for books on teaching you can type: teach* to find items that contain the words teach, teacher, teaching, etc.

  • Use Advanced Search to limit your search by publication type, date, language, etc.  For example: If searching for peer-reviewed articles after 2010, most databases have a limiter for peer-reviewed (scholarly) articles, as well as a date limiter.
